Wood fired stoneware jar. The heavy natural ash glaze and clear shell marks are a result of the piece's placement in the kiln. It was stacked at the edge of the fire box on three large scalloped shells. After the firing, the shells crumble away often leaving a shell like casting of melted wood ash fused to the surface of the pot.
