Wood fired serving bowl with Shino and natural ash glazes. The ash deposits, and resulting glassy grey areas, give an indication of how the pot was oriented in the kiln. On the exterior, the glassy surface indicates that it was facing into the oncoming flame, but on the interior, it is the side facing away from the oncoming flame, where the largest amount of ash collected. It is alway interesting how the currents of flame through the kiln affect the work. I am always struck by the similarity to fluid dymamics. Like water in a stream, there are currents and eddies in the fire.
